What E-E-A-T means and why it changed how content has to be written

Google added Experience to Expertise-Authoritativeness-Trust in December 2022, which expanded the scope of what counts as a quality signal. The change acknowledged that first-hand experience with a topic is a distinct quality signal from expertise. A page about knee surgery recovery written by a physiotherapist is different from the same page written by someone who went through knee surgery recovery. Both have value. Both rank differently.

For most businesses, the practical implication of E-E-A-T is that content needs to reflect genuine knowledge of the topic, connect to demonstrable authority on the subject, and be produced or reviewed by someone whose credentials are visible and verifiable.
